Air Conditioning Service, Repair & Maintenance

Today, we live in a world that relies heavily on heating and air conditioning. We have become accustomed to having our indoor climate regulated, and comfortable. So while we usually take this for granted, here is a short overview on HVAC.

Service

Getting your system serviced does not mean you need to wait until there is a problem. Actually it works best if you have your system gone over twice a year, in the spring and the fall. This maintenance keeps your system cleaned, lubed, topped up, and checked out on a regular basis. The cost of having this done is readily recouped in your energy savings over the season. It also usually keeps you from having a surprising problem mid-season.

Maintenance Contracts

Maintenance contracts are available for either 1 or 2 year terms, at reasonable prices. This provides seasonal tune-ups, cleanings and inspections, that will extend the life of your heating and cooling system. All manufacturers recommend that you have your system serviced bi-annually to keep it safe and operating at peak performance. If after this you need repairs done to your system, you are then a priority customer. This means not only will we rush to service your unit when necessary, but you also receive a 10% discount on repairs.

Repair

This is for when your system is either not maintaining temperature, or when it makes you worried. Do not ignore strange noises, odors, or any changes in how your unit is functioning. Catching a problem early can mean it is more likely an easy fix. If you put if off, you are more likely to need your unit replaced and soon.

Replacement

This is not a comfortable thought, but these units do have a lifespan. Eventually you will need a new one. When you do, you want the assurance that you are getting the best unit available at a reasonable price. If you are getting your service work done, it is less likely for this to come as a surprise. Finding problems early gives you a chance for scheduling repairs or replacement during the off-season.

5 Common Questions About Whole House Water Filtration

As a result of media reports on public utilities delivering poor quality water, interest is surging for whole house water filtration. If you’ve been wondering if this might be the right solution for your family, here are 5 of the most frequently asked questions and corresponding answers that might help you make up your mind.

  1. What, exactly, is it?
A whole house water filtration system is a central filter connected to a home’s main water supply. That means every tap is delivering the highest quality of purified water. It is convenient and creates less waste.
  2. Are there different types of whole house filter systems?
The 2 most common methods of whole house water filtration are:

    • Activated Carbon: Preferred for removing harsh chemicals like disinfectants.
    • Reverse Osmosis: Effective at removing harsh chemical contaminants as well as microbial impurities.
  3. How big is this kind of system?
Size varies, depending on a home’s water demands. There are some systems small enough to fit under the kitchen sink.
  4. How will this system benefit my family?
One of the most commonly problematic chemicals in the public water supply is chlorine. When running hot water in the shower or dishwasher, chlorine dissipates, becoming a vapor that can be inhaled. This can be hazardous for anyone with respiratory sensitivities, like asthma. Regular drinking of chlorinated water increases a person’s cancer risk by 93%. Chlorinated water can also irritate the skin. If bathing is extremely drying or freshly laundered clothes make you itch, your choice of soap and detergent may not be the problem. It may be the water.
  5. Will it remove fluoride?
There are some carbon filters that can remove fluoride but results may not be reliable. It may be necessary to install filter media material like activated alumina to address fluoride concerns.

Sewer Pipe Inspection and Cleaning

If you are having to deal with multiple clogged drains, and plunging is just not helping much, you most likely have a problem with the sewer line. This is a sad event, as we count on our plumbing to deal with the dirty water and waste. It is something that gets little thought until it is not working right.

Over time the pipe gets clogged up with grease, waste, and sometimes even tree roots. The old answer was to put a rotary snake down the pipe to unplug the line. This actually just punches a hole in the clog, giving temporary relief. In due time the clog that is still there catches more stuff and plugs back up. Another problem with the snake is if the line is old and getting thin sometimes the snake finds a week point and punches through. This creates a larger problem with an immediate need for repair.

At PlumbSmart, we start with a sewer camera line inspection. This is so we can find out what is causing the problems, and see if the pipes are in decent shape. Then we will offer the right solutions to best fix this. If the line is in good shape but just clogged, we can hydro-jet the line and clean it out. The hydro-jet method removes the blockage and actually cleans the pipes, giving you the peace of mind that you’re not going to have this issue again soon.

If the problem is more than just a clog, or the waste line is not in good shape the camera inspection will show this. We will then be able to discuss the best and most economical solution. Our goal is to get your life back to normal as quickly and painlessly as possible.

5 Signs Your AC Needs Repairs
The weather is starting to warm up, and air conditioning season is here. There are some signs you can watch for that will let you know your air conditioner is in need of repair or even replacement. The earlier in the season that you catch these problems, the less likely you will face extreme temperatures without a working unit.

It feels like the fan is not moving air like it should. This can mean that your compressor is failing, or your duct work might be to blame.

This could be a problem with the thermostat, or with the AC unit.

Anytime your unit is making odd or excessive noises, it is a sign of a problem, it may mean that your unit is getting ready to fail. Sometimes it is something simpler, and getting your unit serviced quickly could prevent failure.

Odors are a sign of a problem. Musty smells are of sign of moisture in your unit or duct work, and are a sign that moisture is getting someplace it shouldn’t. This is not only bad for your air conditioner, it is bad for the health of your family. Acrid or pungent smells are a sign of something getting hot that really shouldn’t.

Whole House Water Filtration: Myth vs. Fact

We all know that drinking more water is good for our health, and that having pure water is very important. There is however a myth that has gone around that bottled water is purer and better to drink. This is a sad misconception because according to the Government Accountability Office:

“Of particular note, FDA does not have the specific statutory authority to require bottlers to use certified laboratories for water quality tests or to report test results, even if violations of the standards are found.”

Therefore, the water out of your tap, which is heavily monitored and regulated, is actually safer in many cases than the water out of a bottle. Even so, the chlorine taste and odor is rather rough for drinking and even sometimes for bathing. One of the benefits of a whole house filtration system is that the chlorine gets filtered out, leaving you with better tasting water.

Another reason to filter the water to the whole house is that this system reduces sand, soil, silt, sediment and rust as it comes into your home. This keeps your plumbing working better as well as your appliances like your clothes washer, dishwasher, and refrigerator ice maker. There is nothing harder on a faucet or shower head than getting clogged up, and these appliances are equally impacted.

Filtering your house water makes sense. You have clean good tasting water that you know is safe, and you protect your water using appliances as well as your faucets. At PlumbSmart Plumbing Heating and Air Conditioning, we know you want the best for your family. We are happy to offer you this valuable service, and we do so at fraction of what other plumbers charge. Contact us today for more information about water filters, or all your plumbing needs.
