A mini split is an air conditioner that cools one space without any ductwork. It has two parts: a small outdoor unit and a slim indoor head mounted high on a wall, connected by a single thin line set. The indoor head blows cool air right into the room on its own thermostat. Because there are no ducts, you skip the biggest cost and mess of adding central air to a space that never had it.
